IGO appeals for $98 million for people in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), António Vitorino, raised on Monday alarm over the scarcity of funding for humanitarian operations required to support millions of Syrians and their host communities in Syria and neighboring countries.

The IOM appealed, in a report, for $98 million to support 1.9 million people inside Syria and $108 million to support 817,500 refugees and their host communities in 2023.

The Brussels conference is due to take place on 14-15 June, and it will be attended by the IOM Director General.

The conference represents a significant opportunity to express solidarity and commitment to the people most affected by the Syrian crisis.

After twelve years of conflict in Syria, the country remains one of the largest countries that witness humanitarian crises in the world, with 6.6 million people displaced inside the country and at least 5.3 million registered refugees in neighboring countries.

With 15.3 million people requiring humanitarian assistance, representing nearly 70 per cent of the population, the Syrian people continue to face daily challenges in meeting their basic needs.
