Syrian, Iraqi diplomats address political, security files

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of foreign affairs of Iraq Fuad Hussein discussed on Sunday the main common political and security files with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Mekdad.

The two officials highlighted, in a joint press conference, the humanitarian situation in Syria, as Hussein said that the humanitarian situation will be addressed in the next step, according to Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Mekdad arrived on May 3 in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on an official visit.

Mekdad voiced hope to work with Iraq in fighting terrorism and ending drug trade.

Captagon has long been a lucrative part of Syria’s war economy, estimated to be worth billions of dollars a year.

The Syrian minister also highlighted economic sanctions imposed by the West on Syria, saying that they are “immoral”.

“We want to persuade others that imposing sanctions does not work among states,” he added.

In turn, the spokesman of Iraq’s Foreign Ministry Ahmad al-Sahaf said that his country supports the political solution for the Syrian crisis.

Iraq supports the path of achieving civil peace in Syria and all related negotiations,” Sahaf told the INA.

The position of Iraq towards the Syrian crisis is clear and it is represented by the necessity of solving it politically and not militarily, he added.

The two countries seek to reinforce the bilateral efforts to ensure the security and stability of the Syrian-Iraqi border.
