Celebratory gunfire causes fires in Afrin farmlands

AFRIN, Syria (North Press) – Massive fires broke out on Sunday across large swaths of wheat and barley fields in Afrin’s countryside following celebratory gunfire in response to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s victory in the presidential runoff.

Eyewitnesses told North Press that massive fires scourged through 30 dunums of wheat harvest northwest of Rajo district. Fires also burned about 25 dunums of wheat harvest near the village of Sanara, in the Sheikh Hadid district west of Afrin.

The eyewitnesses said the fires were caused by intensive celebratory gunfire shot by various Turkish-backed opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA). They noted that other fires likely broke out during the night in large areas north of the Sheikh Hadid district.

Twenty individuals, including four children and two women, were injured by gunshots during the SNA’s celebration of Erdogan’s election victory in areas under their control in north Syria.
