US mediation fails to reopen Semalka border crossing in NE Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, informed sources told North Press that US mediation efforts to reopen the Semalka-Faysh Khabur border crossing between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and northeast Syria have failed to reach any results.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that after mediation efforts failed, the US stated that the two Kurdish parties should resolve their outstanding issues by themselves.

Earlier on Thursday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) closed Semalka-Faysh Kahbur border crossing until further notice without giving details.

The crossing’s administration notified international NGOs about the decision.

A source from the crossing said that they had been notified to close the crossing even in front of commercial exchange and diplomatic relations, without giving further details.
