DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The US State Department voiced on Sunday its disagreement over the Arab League’s decision to readmit Syria into the bloc.
A US State Department Spokesperson told Reuters that while Washington aims at building security and stability in Syria – just like its Arab partners – it remained “skeptical of Assad’s willingness to take the steps necessary to resolve Syria’s crisis.”
“We do not believe Syria merits readmission into the Arab League at this time,” the spokesperson said, adding that US sanctions would remain in full effect.
Earlier today, Arab foreign ministers agreed, in a meeting in Cairo, on readmitting Syria into the Arab League, after nearly 12 years of suspension.
Despite returning to the league, the Secretary-General of the Arab League Council, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stated in a press conference that Syria’s return does not mean the end of the crisis in the country.
