Turkish border guards kill Syrian, injure 5 others
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – One person was killed and five others were injured on Sunday while they were trying to cross Syrian-Turkish border, west of Idlib, northwest Syria, while they were crossing the border illegally.
A local source told North Press that the residents of the town of Khirbat al-Jouz, west of Idlib, transported people to hospital after they found them 50 meters far from the border. The border guards targeted them.
The Turkish border guards also opened fire on a farmer while he was working in his land that is near the border on the vicinity of the town, however, he survived, according to the source.
The injured people sustained serious injuries, the source added.
Most of those who want to access Turkey resort to illegal and dangerous smuggling routes in light of unavailable safe ones to either reunite with their families or secure jobs to provide for their families amid the dire economic conditions the country is witnessing.
On April 27, Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounced the indiscriminate shooting at Syrian civilians on the Syrian-Turkish border, and the torturing and using excessive force against Syrian asylum seekers, trying to cross into Turkey by the Turkish border guards.
