ISIS claims responsibility over targeting SDF leader in eastern Syria

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Islamic State (ISIS), through close outlets, claimed on Friday responsibility for targeting a military official of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a town, east of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

ISIS-run Amaq news agency said, in a statement, that the group’s militants targeted, with machineguns, the leader of Deir ez-Zor Military Council Tayesir al-Sarhid, near his house in the town of al-Busayrah, in Deir ez-Zor eastern countryside.

Amaq claimed that the SDF leader was killed in the attack, a person who was accompanying him was wounded, while their vehicle that was carrying them was damaged.

However, the SDF has not commented on the incident so far.

On April 27, ISIS claimed responsibility for targeting a military vehicle of the SDF in the northern countryside of Raqqa, northern Syria, reporting human casualties.

The countryside of Deir ez-Zor witnesses increasing assassinations against SDF fighters, employees of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), tribe leaders, and civilian population despite intensive security operations by the SDF and the Global Coalition.

ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The SDF, with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.

After Baghouz, thousands of ISIS militants were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)-held areas.
