Syrian opposition seeks to hinder “normalization” with Damascus

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – The visit of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) to the United States (US) aimed at discussing and finding a mechanism to put pressure on “the Syrian regime to push it towards a political process,” said Badr Jamous, head of the HNC, on Friday.

The HNC is an umbrella body which was created to represent the Syrian opposition in the planned Geneva peace talks in 2016.

In an exclusive statement to North Press, Jamous added that they would pay visits to a number of Arab and European countries in the upcoming period to hinder the normalization track with Damascus.

On April 13, Jamous expressed the HNC’s disapproval for any “free normalization” with the Syrian government, and appealed to Arab countries to place “more pressure on it.”

Lately, the Syrian government, which has been shunned by its Arab surrounding for over a decade, witnessed Arab opening and moving towards normalization, especially after the disaster of the Feb. 6 earthquake.

The HNC delegation met with officials of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs of the US Department of State.

Jamous objected a “free normalization with the [Syrian] regime” because that would disrupt the political process, as he put it.

He indicated that their visit to Washington came to understand the American position regarding the “normalization with the regime and the continuation of the imposed sanctions until reaching a political solution.”

The head of the HNC would visit other Arab and European countries to stop the normalization.
