Turkish diplomat meets leaders of Syrian opposition in Ankara

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Deputy Minister Ambassador Burak Akçapar met on Wednesday with prominent figures of the opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC) in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

Turkish Ministry of foreign Affairs said, on twitter, that Akçapar met the President of the SNC, Salem al-Meslet, head of High Negotiation Committee (HNC) of the Syrian opposition, Bader al-Jamous, and head of the opposition’s Syrian Interim Government (SIG), Abdurrahman Mustafa at an Iftar dinner.

The aforementioned figures “discussed the developments regarding Syria,” according to the ministry.

Turkey’s efforts to normalize relations with Syria have developed over the past few months. Late in December 2022, a trilateral meeting took place between the defense ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia in Moscow, marking the first high-level meeting between Syria and Turkey since the onset of the Syrian war in 2011.

In early April, Deputy of foreign ministers of Syria, Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed on establishing a joint trilateral meeting of Syria, Turkey and Russia at the level of Foreign Ministers, as the agenda will include the issue of negotiations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
