2 dead SDF fighters found in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The bodies of two fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were found on Wednesday by locals in a town in the west of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, after they went missing for hours from their workplace.
A military source from the SDF said that locals from the town of Abu Khashab in the west of Deir ez-Zor found the bodies of Mahmoud al-Jamida and Mahmoud al-Hamada with gunshot wounds near the main road in the town.
The two fighters left work in the afternoon and went missing, later to be found dead by locals at night, the source added.
Regions of Deir ez-Zor witness more assassinations amid the increasing activity of ISIS sleeper cells.
On Thursday, media outlets linked to the group announced that ISIS claimed responsibility for “killing” two fighters.
ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The SDF, with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.
After Baghouz, thousands of ISIS militants were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)-held areas.
The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.
