AANES releases individuals accused of terrorism in Syria’s Hasakah
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the Office of Justice and Reform Affairs in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) released a number of detainees accused of terrorism from Hasakah Central Prison, northeast Syria.
Those released were accused of terrorist crimes, some of them affiliated with Islamic State (ISIS) and others with the Syrian government and hail from different Syrian areas, according to the office.
Kafaa Sinjar, the co-chair of the Office of Justice and Reform Affairs, told North Press that about 20 prisoners were released for maintaining good behavior, as a quarter of their detention period or more has passed.
North Press was not able to know the verdicts issued against those released.
Sinjar confirmed that there will be other groups that will be released later.
The release was issued based on the decision of Social Justice Council, which is the highest judicial authority in northeastern Syria, Sinjar noted.
ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.
After Baghouz, thousands of ISIS fighters were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the AANES-held areas.
