Iranian delegation arrives in Saudi Arabia to reopen embassy

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – An Iranian delegation arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to pave the way for reopening diplomatic missions as the two countries prepare to normalize relations.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported that the Iranian delegation arrived in Riyadh to reopen the Iranian embassy and consulate “in accordance with the recent agreement between the two countries,”

A few days before, a Saudi delegation made a similar visit to the Iranian capital of Tehran.

“One team is due to travel to Jeddah to prepare for the reopening of Iran’s consulate there and its representation in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation,” according to IRNA.

The source added that the other team will stay in Riyadh to reopen the embassy.

On March 10, Iran and Saudi agreed to thaw relations and reopen their embassies in each other’s country ending their diplomatic rift.

On April 6, Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian met in Beijing.

Saudi Arabia cut off relations with Iran in 2016 after Iranian protesters attacked the Saudi embassy in response to Saudi Arabia executing Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Tension between the two countries simmered after Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intervened in the Yemen war, where the Iran-aligned Houthi movement ousted a Saudi-backed government and took over the capital, Sanaa.
