Iraqi parliament delegation arrives in Sulaymaniyah after attack

ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) – A delegation from the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi parliament arrived on Monday at the site of the Turkish attack on Sulaymaniyah International Airport in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq (KRI) to investigate the incident that sparked large protests in the city on Sunday.

This came after a Turkish attack on a convoy included General Mazloum Abdi, Commander in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), forces of the Sulaymaniyah-headquartered Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG), and personnel of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS near Sulaymaniyah International Airport on April 7.

A parliamentary source told North Press that the delegation consists of members of the security and defense committee of the parliament. The purpose of the visit is to oversee the investigation regarding the targeting of Sulaymaniyah Airport on Friday, April 7, by a suspected Turkish drone.

The source said the delegation is expected to provide a report based on information about the incident and submit it to the parliament later.

The attack, which coincided with the presence of General Mazloum Abdi to discuss coordination in the fight against ISIS, sparked widespread public anger in the KRI as they protested in the streets of Sulaymaniyah on Sunday.

On April 8, the Iraqi president demanded an apology from Turkey and to stop “blatant attacks.”

This is the second delegation arriving from Baghdad since the attack occurred. The Iraqi National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, visited on April 8 the site of the attack and met with the officials of the Sulaymaniyah governorate.

The delegation consists of Abbas al-Zamili, head of the Security and Defense Committee in the parliament, and members of parliament, Ali al-Saadi, Muhammad al-Ramithi, Khaled Sultan Hashem, and Merywan Qarni,” according to the source.

The delegation is scheduled to meet with leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

The first deputy of the head of the parliament, Muhsin al-Mandalawi, advised earlier to form an investigation committee into the attack on the airport.
