Turkish-backed organization builds new settlement in Syria’s Afrin
AFRIN, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, a local organization with Turkish support completed the building of a new settlement in the Kurdish region of Afrin, northwestern Syria.
An exclusive source told North Press that the Turkey-based Wafaa al-Mohsenin Charity Association had completed the construction of about 50 apartments near the village of Muhammadiyah in the south of the town of Jindires, some 20 km west of Afrin.
The source said the Association continues building other apartments in the area.
The source added that the project was built near the settlement of al-Za’im Compound, which was constructed a year ago funded by some Palestinian organizations. The number of apartments reached about 150 in both villages.
About a month ago, the Turkey-based International Association for Relief and Development (ONSUR), finished building three settlements in Jabal al-Ahlam area in southeastern Afrin.
The number of settlements built by Turkey with the support of associations with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in countries including Kuwait, Qatar, and Palestine in the Turkish-occupied areas in northern Syria exceeded more than 100, according to North Press’ own investigations. 18 of which have been built in the sub-districts of Sharran, Sheikh Hadid, Jindires, Bulbul, and Rajo near the city of Afrin, as noted by North Press on its recent tour of the region.
Afrin has been under the occupation of Turkey and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), since 2018 following a military operation dubbed “Olive Branch” against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) under the pretext of preserving Turkey’s national security.
In June 2022, Syrians for Truth and Justice (STJ), a human rights organization, published an extensive investigative report, in which it detailed Turkey’s demographic engineering in Afrin and its countryside.
