Government forces arrest 2 opposition members in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian government forces arrested on Sunday evening two former members of the Syrian opposition in the northern countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press that both Walid Jado al-Dagher and Amer Abdulfettah al-Dagher were arrested by the government forces near the town of al-Hara, north of Daraa.

The two young men are from the town of Inkhil and are working in trade, the source said.

He indicated that they were arrested at a temporary checkpoint which was removed following their arrest. The reason for the arrest is unknown, he added.

The source pointed out that they were both members of the opposition factions but they had their status settled later.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and the government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their heavy weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those oppose the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front).

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in line with the 2018 agreement, the governorate has been living in a state of security chaos, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.
