UN calls for mechanism to help locate 100,000 missing Syrians
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Top UN officials called on Tuesday for creating a new mechanism to help locate about 100,000 missing Syrians, and urged conflicting parties and member states to cooperate.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres debated the human rights situation in Syria, saying that the country and its people “deserve peace” and to know the truth about the fate of their loved ones.
He urged all Member States to act and called on the Syrian government and on all parties to the conflict in Syria to cooperate.
“We must work to resolve this deeply painful situation with determination and urgency,” Guterres added.
In addition, he urged the international community to help ease the plight of the Syrian people.
In Turn, Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, called for a mechanism that would be centered on “victims and survivors … by the working presumption that the missing person is alive and in urgent need of help.”
In Sept., 2022, DW said that the UN is to establish an international mechanism to look for over 100,000 Syrians who have gone missing during Syrian civil war.
