Political solution in Syria reaches deadlock – Qatari official

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The political solution in Syria is near deadlock, Qatar’s representative to the UN said on Tuesday evening, March 21.

The Qatari UN representative attributed the reasons to the Syrian government’s lack of commitment and its insistence on using the security and military means to reach a solution.

The statement was made by the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, Hind Abdulrahman al-Muftah, during an interactive dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic on Tuesday, within the framework of the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council.

Al-Muftah confirmed that the Syrian government insists on using a security and military solution based on “arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, killing, torture, destruction, forced displacement, siege, and the use of internationally banned chemical weapons.”

In addition, she outlined “the regime’s deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian objects, and committing the most heinous crimes and gross violations of human rights all affected a political solution for Syria.”

The Qatari UN representative stressed that a peaceful settlement, based on the full implementation of UN Resolution 2254, which preserves the unity, sovereignty, and independence of Syria, must be reached.
