Turkey, Egypt to restore ambassadorial-level diplomacy
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Foreign Minister of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, said that talks with Turkey on the possibility of restoring ambassadorial-level diplomacy would take place at “the appropriate time”.
The remarks were made in the wake the first visit to Egypt by Turkey’s top diplomat since ties ruptured a decade ago.
Relations were severely strained in 2013, after Egypt’s then-army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, led the ouster of Mohamed Mursi, Egypt’s elected president and an ally of Ankara. However, the relations have gradually thawed since 2021.
At a joint news conference with Shoukry, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkey may upgrade its diplomatic relations with Egypt to ambassadorial-level “as soon as possible”.
