Talks between Assad, Putin kick off in Kremlin

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held talks with Russian Leader Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin in Russia’s capital, Moscow.

Putin said that February 6 earthquake exacerbated the suffering of the Syrian people. “We as loyal friends do everything we can to alleviate this suffering.”

Thanks to Russia’s contribution in Syria, he said, “important results were achieved in terms of fighting terrorism, and this makes it possible to stabilize the internal social, economic and political situation.”

Al-Assad, for his part, said that his visit “would pave the way for a new phase in bilateral relations between both countries in all fields.”

The Syrian President also expressed Damascus’ support to Moscow in “its war against the Nazism supported by the west.”

The talks, which coincide with the 12th anniversary of the Syrian Civil War, come amid Russian efforts to mend fences between Damascus and Ankara, which has backed opposition groups that have tried to overthrow al-Assad.
