Unknown gunmen kill 2 government soldiers in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two soldiers of Syrian government forces were killed on Tuesday in an infiltration operation carried out by unknown gunmen who targeted their post in a town, east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

A military source of the government forces in the town of al-Mayadin, eastern Deir ez-Zor, said that unknown gunmen infiltrated into a post of 17th Division of the government forces on the outskirts of the town.

The infiltration resulted in the killing of two soldiers, who hail from the city of Homs, central Syria, and confiscating their weapons, the source added, under the condition of anonymity.

Soldiers in nearby checkpoints did not hear the gunshot, as the gunmen may have killed the soldiers using firearm silencers, according to the source.

Since 2017, the Syrian government forces have been combing the desert in response to Islamic State (ISIS) increasing practices that have caused the forces massive human and material losses.

Such kinds of attacks are usually carried out by ISIS sleeper cells, which continue to attack the government forces and Iranian-backed militants in the Syrian Badia by planting IEDs and setting ambushes.
