New York attacker receives life sentence in prison
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Up on failure to reach a unanimous decision for a death sentence, the man who was convicted of killing eight people by driving a truck on Manhattan bike path in New York City in 2017 received on Monday a life sentence in prison without parole.
The 35-year-old Uzbek, Sayfullo Saipov, will spend his life sentence at Colorado’s Supermax facility, the most secure US federal prison.
Saipov was convicted in January by a federal jury of committing murder with a goal of joining Islamic State (ISIS), and he planned the attack and showed no regret after the killings on Oct. 31, 2017.
Five Argentinian tourists, two Americans and a Belgian woman were killed.
Defense lawyers said the life sentence for Saipov, who was convicted of 28 counts, including a murder, was appropriate and sufficient to protect society.
Saipov’s case is the first federal death penalty trial since President Joe Biden came to power.
