QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Ending years of tension, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China released a trilateral statement, announcing resuming ties between Iran and Saudi.
Following five rounds of preliminary negotiations in Iraq and Oman, and following days of intensive talks in Beijing Iran and Saudi agreed to thaw relations and open their embassies in each other’s country.
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said, “The dialogue between the two countries were explicit, transparent, all-inclusive and constructive.”
Shamkhani added that restoring ties between the two countries will contribute to “entail the promotion of regional stability and security and closer cooperation among the Persian Gulf states and the Islamic world.”
The two regional rivals back opposite sides in the ongoing wars in Yemen, Syria and others.
Saudi Arabia cut off relations with Iran in 2016 after Iranian protesters attacked the Saudi embassy in response to Saudi Arabia executing Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
