Ankara summons US ambassador over Milley’s visit to NE Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Turkey’s Foreign Ministry summoned Jeff Flake, the US ambassador to Ankara, on Monday to ask for clarification regarding the visit of top US General Mark Milley to northeast Syria.

On Saturday, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General, Mark Milley, made an unexpected visit to a US base in Syria to evaluate the mission against the Islamic State (ISIS) and review protection measures for US troops.

The region of northeast Syria is held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Ankara deems as terrorists and a threat to its national security.

On Sunday, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned Milley’s visit, considering it a “blatant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
