First Syrian shelling since quake targets north Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, Syrian government forces shelled with artillery shells a number of areas in north Idlib, weeks after the disastrous earthquake that hit north Syria on February 6.

A local source told North Press, “Syrian government forces based in Saraqib launched a violent shelling after noon time against posts held by the armed opposition factions on the outskirts of Kafraiya, Ma’arrat Misrin, Binnish and the Sarmada-Idlib highway.”

The source said that material damage was caused, but that no human losses were reported.

Tens of families fled makeshift camps within the scope of the targeted area, he added.

Areas in northwest Syria repeatedly witness military escalation and mutual shelling between parties of the conflict. However, following the deadly quake on February 6, relative peace prevailed in the region.
