Syria’s Daraa witnesses 4 killing cases in one week

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Attacks by unknown attackers continue to occur in Daraa Governorate and its countryside, south Syria, killing four individuals, including government soldiers, in different areas in the governorate in a week.

On Feb. 22, local sources told North Press that “Ahmad Jaber Nayef al-Obaidat” was killed after sustaining critical injuries in an IED blast that was planted in a car on Feb. 21.

On Feb. 21, an IED exploded in a civil car near a military post of the Syrian government forces in al-Matar neighborhood in the city of Daraa.

The sources added that al-Obaidat sustained critical injuries that caused his left leg to be amputated before being transferred to the National Hospital in the city of Daraa from which he was referred to a hospital in Damascus where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Al-Obaidat, who hails from the town of al-Shajarah in the western countryside of Daraa, is accused of working for the Military Security Branch of the government forces,” according to the sources.

On Feb. 22, a local source told North Press that Khaled al-Taani was shot dead by armed individuals in the town of Sahem al-Golan in the western countryside of Daraa.

The source added that al-Taani was an ex-member in the Syrian opposition factions after defecting from government forces in 2011.

The victim had obtained a settlement card after government forces entered Daraa in 2018 and had not joined military forces affiliated with the Syrian army, according to the source.

On Feb. 19, local sources told North Press that “Muhammad al-Shokri” was shot dead by one of his sons in the town of Muzayrib in the western countryside of Daraa.

The sources added that motives for the murder have not been determined, and the killer was handed over to security bodies of the government forces.

On the same day, a local source told North Press that “Yaser al-Hazaa” was shot dead by two individuals in the sheep market in the town of Eastern Ghariyah in the eastern countryside of the governorate.

The source added that al-Hazaa, who hails from the village of Asim in the Lajat area in the eastern countryside of Daraa, was killed for revenge.

In July 2018, opposition factions and Syrian government forces reached an agreement, mediated by Russia, for the opposition-held areas of Daraa.

According to the deal, opposition militants who agreed to hand over heavy weapons, were handed special cards to protect them from prosecution, and allowed to stay in Daraa. Those opposed to the agreement were forced to leave for Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).
