EU follows steps in responding to needs in quake-hit Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Following the Feb. 6 devastating earthquake, the EU immediately mobilized its emergency and humanitarian tools to help Syrians in need following several steps.
The steps the EU adopted in the process of providing humanitarian support to affected Syrians are: cooperating with humanitarian partners on the ground, activating the Civil Protection Mechanism with in-kind assistance, activating the European humanitarian response capacity for emergency aid to reach people wherever they are.
They also include finding solutions to flow aid to both the government-held areas and those of the opposition affected by the earthquakes and making sure that relief assistance reaches all people in need.
On Feb.20 at 20:04 local time, a new 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria with Iskenderun being the epicenter and was felt in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Antakya in southern Turkey.
On February, 6, devastating earthquakes hit southern Turkey and northwest Syria, killing thousands and injuring many more, in addition to devastating thousands of buildings under which thousands were trapped.
The EU states, Britain and the US refused to respond to the affected people needs through the Syrian government and necessitated the support be delivered through humanitarian partners without affecting their position regarding normalizing ties with the “al-Assad regime.”
