Syrian government to construct 350 housing units for quake-hit people
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian government promised to shelter people impacted by the Feb. 6 devastating earthquake by building about 350 housing units.
Syrian Minister of Public Works and Housing, Suhail Abdul Latif, announced in a press conference on Monday the government will construct 350 housing units to shelter people who have become homeless due to the earthquakes.
On Monday evening, three buildings have been partially collapsed in Bustan al-Basha neighborhood in the city of Aleppo by another earthquake that hit Turkey’s Hatay Province.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring much more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press has documented the collapse of 410 buildings and the partial damage of 1.430 others in the government-held areas.
The government has already provided 250 sheltering points in schools, hotels, mosques, and cultural centers, according to Abdul Latif.
He noted, “Construction companies were required to provide up to 300 prefabricated housing units to shelter the affected people.”
The Minister of Public Works and Housing stressed that safety of 22.000 buildings in Latakia, 21.627 in Aleppo and 7.200 in Hama have been checked by a specialized committee of engineers and experts.
