After Earthquake, Aleppo’s Neighborhoods Lack Drinking Water
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – A local source from Aleppo said on Saturday that drinking water has not yet reached the neighborhoods of Bustan al-Qasr, al-Mua’di and al-Kalasa since the devastating earthquake that hit Syria on February 6.
An exclusive source within the Drinking Water Institution in Aleppo told North Press that the earthquake has greatly damaged drinking water services and that repairing damaged infrastructure is currently impossible to the risk of collapsing buildings.
On Feb. 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Syria and Turkey, killing more than 45.000 and injuring many more, in addition to destroying thousands of buildings.
Pipelines into the neighborhoods of al-Salhin, al-Mua’di, al-Kalasa and parts of Bustan al-Qasr have sustained great damage, according to the source.
Lutfi Dawood, a resident of Bustan al-Qasr, told North Press that they are transferring water to their houses from a nearby neighborhood.
The collapse of electricity towers lead to power outages. However, the towers have since been repaired, the source of the Drinking Water Institution said.
The source added that maintenance teams are working on restoring water to the city as soon as possible, though he did not outline a specific time frame for their restauration.
