Aleppo City Council Demolishes 170 At-Risk Buildings
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – An exclusive source in Aleppo Governorate said on Saturday that the City Council demolished 170 at-risk buildings as of February 17 following the Feb. 6 earthquake that hit Syria.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated exclusively to North Press that 11 additional buildings are set to be demolished, noting that the process of demolishing some buildings can take a few days depending on the location and scale of possible damage to the surrounding buildings.
At dawn on February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
Around 300 buildings have been evacuated so far, the source said, as they were deemed high-risk.
On Feb. 10, the Syrian government announced that the governorates of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, and Idlib would be labeled “disaster zones.”
The deadly earthquake caused the collapse of 60 buildings in Aleppo alone.
The source added that Syrian Civil Defense teams helped residents gather their belongings from the at-risk buildings.
