Syria earthquake death toll surpasses 3.581
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The deadly earthquake death toll in Syria surpassed 3.581 by Saturday night.
However, more than 5.348 injuries were recorded in all Syrian regions six days after the catastrophic earthquake.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
The figures were released on Saturday by the Syrian Ministry of Health and the Civil Defense in the opposition-held areas in northwest of the country.
The Syrian Ministry of Health announced that the number of fatalities has reached to 1.408 deaths and 2.341 injuries in the government-held areas.
The Civil Defense, affiliated with the Syrian opposition, in Idlib announced 2.167 deaths and 2.950 injuries in northwest Syria.
According to the Civil Defense, searching for bodies under the rubbles in several places in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo are still going on.
In the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) areas the death toll has remained static even though the region felt mild aftershocks following the initial devastating earthquake. The Health Board affiliated with the AANES has counted six dead people and 57 injured ones.
On Friday, the Syrian government has declared the areas worst affected by Feb. 6 deadly earthquakes – Latakia, Hama, Aleppo and Idlib – as “disaster zones” and will set up a fund for their reconstruction.
