Kurdish Red Crescent calls on NGOs to provide urgent aid
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, the Kurdish Red Crescent called on international and humanitarian organizations to render urgent aid to those affected by the earthquake that struck areas of Turkey and Syria a day earlier.
Speaking at the March 12th Martyrs’ Stadium in the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria, Hassan Amin, co-chair of Kurdish Red Crescent, said their capabilities are limited. They “are short of medicine and equipment, which are not enough to aid those affected by the earthquake in northeast Syria.”
Amin appealed to NGOs to rapidly take action in order to help extract hundreds of people still trapped under the rubble in Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo city and Afrin, among many other areas hit by the earthquake.
“We have installed tents and prepared medical and first aid teams. However, we are short of medical equipment owing to the imposed siege,” he said.
On Monday, Kurdish Red Crescent installed tents in the cities of Qamishli and Hasakah to serve as accommodation centers in the case of further earthquakes.
