Syrian Universities Postpone Exams Following Earthquake
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The universities of Tishrin, Tartus, Hama, and Aleppo postponed conducting exams following the earthquake that hit northwest Syria on Monday at dawn.
Bassam Ibrahim, Minister of Higher Education, stated to a local radio that the presidents of universities were authorized to make decisions regarding the exams, whereas Damascus university did not postpone the exams.
The university of Tartus posted on its official Facebook a circulation that the exams that were supposed to be conducted on Tuesday have been postponed until further notice.
Syria witnessed at 4:17 am an earthquake affected by another stronger one that hit Turkey’s Gaziantep.
Syrian National Earthquake Center (NEC) said that the earthquake struck north of the city of Iskenderun, on the Turkish coast, with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, while Tartus, on the Syrian coast, recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4.
The earthquake caused the collapse of many buildings in several areas in Syria, people are still trapped under the rubble.
The Syrian Minister of Education, Darem al-Tabaa said there is no official resolution to suspend schools.
Al-Tabaa stated to the local Sham FM radio station that officials of the Education Directorates are authorized to take necessary decisions in case there is a need for suspension.
