Unknown target headquarters for drug in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday mid-night, unknown attackers targeted a house, which was used for smuggling drugs, in the western countryside of Daraa, a governorate south Syria.
Local sources told North Press that unknown attackers targeted a house in the village of Alajami in the western countryside of Daraa that was used for preparing drugs to be smuggled to Jordan.
The sources added that the attack caused damages to parts of the building.
The targeted house belongs to Ahmad Mehawesh al-Khaldi known as Abu Salem al-Khaldi, who was arrested two years ago by security members of the Fourth Armored Division of the government forces.
The sources noted that al-Khaldi, who was a leader of a group of the Fourth Armored Division, is the biggest drug traffickers in the region.
They said, “The arrest of al-Khaldi resulted from disputes over drugs smuggling operations with officers of the Fourth Armored Division.”
Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been in a state of insecurity, as daily assassinations target government soldiers, officials and officers. Thefts have surged, too.
In July 2018, opposition factions and Syrian government forces reached an agreement, mediated by Russia, for the opposition-held areas of Daraa. According to the deal, opposition militants who agreed to hand over heavy weapons, were handed special cards to protect them from prosecution, and allowed to stay in Daraa. Those opposed to the agreement were forced to leave for Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).
