Erdogan says Iran may join talks on Syrian-Turkish rapprochement
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed about the possibility that Iran may join talks on normalizing ties between Syria and Turkey which Russia has been exerting efforts to reach.
Erdogan, at a televised meeting with the youth, said, “Iran may also join” trilateral talks between Russia, Syria and Turkey.
He claimed that these talks can contribute to bring “tranquility to the region.”
Late in December 2022, a trilateral meeting took place between defense ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia in Moscow, marking the first meeting between Syria and Turkey since start of Syrian war in 2011.
Turkey and Syria have been foes for the last 11 years, after Ankara started backing the Syrian opposition and its armed factions that have attempted to overthrow the Syrian government.
On Jan. 12, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that he would meet his Syrian and Russian counterparts Faisal al-Mekdad and Sergey Lavrov respectively in early February.
