SDF continues combing operations in Raqqa, captures ISIS militants

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Sunday that their forces captured operatives of the Islamic State (ISIS) and seized weapons as part of ‘Operation Retaliation for Raqqa Martyrs’ which targets sleeper cells of the extremist organization in Raqqa Governorate, northern Syria.

This operation was launched by the SDF and the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) on January 25 and is backed by the US-led Global Coalition. The campaign came as a response to the ISIS attack on an Asayish security center on December 26, 2022 in Raqqa, which killed six SDF and Asayish fighters.

The SDF Media Center said in a statement, “On Saturday, the forces completed sweeping the neighborhoods of Euphrates, Nazlat Shahada, and al-Kournish in Raqqa city, in addition to the al-Safsafa town in the eastern countryside of Tabqa.”

The forces detained three ISIS operatives “and seized several weapons, ammunition, and booklets on extremism and ISIS badges.”

“This morning, the forces began sweeping Tabqa city and The Kurds’ Neighborhood on the northern side of Raqqa city,” the statement said, adding that the campaign is still continuing.
