Syrian government soldier killed in east Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, a Syrian soldier was killed in an armed attack carried out by unknown gunmen in the eastern countryside of Daraa, south Syria.

A local source told North Press, “Muhammad Lu’ay Sibeh, known as Abu Lu’ay was killed by unknown gunmen in the town of Sayda.”

Sibeh was a former member in opposition factions and joined the Fourth Armored Division of the Syrian government after obtaining a settlement card in July 2018, according to the source.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, those opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Sibeh had participated in storming campaigns in a number of towns and cities in Daraa notably the town of Karak Sharqi searching for wanted men and in the siege on Daraa in 2021.

In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day siege. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying government security posts in the towns of the governorate.
