Italy donates €1.5 million for Palestinian children in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Italy donated on Wednesday €1.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to provide education support to Palestine refugee children in Yarmouk camp, south of Damascus.

The UNRWA said, in a release, Italy’s contribution will rehabilitate an UNRWA school that has sustained heavy damage during the Syrian war.

Yarmouk camp, which was established in the 1950s, is the first and largest Palestinian refugee camp in Syria.

The camp, that shelters 160.000 Palestine refugees, witnessed fierce battles during the Syrian crisis, during which various armed groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, al-Nusra Front) and the Islamic State (ISIS) took control of it.

Italy always supports “education and health activities for vulnerable Palestinians and Syrians living in the area,” said Massimiliano D’Antuono, Chargé d’Affaires of the Italian Embassy in Damascus.

The contribution will be dedicated to “support the light rehabilitation and equipment of the school inside the camp,” according to the UNRWA.

In Dec. 2022, the United Nation International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said that Italy donated €1 million to ease sufferings of Syrian children with special disabilities.
