ISIS supporters capture Iranian-backed militants in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, armed men, who were raising Islamic State (ISIS) banners captured a bunch of Iranian-backed militants in a town west of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria.

A military source in the Iranian-backed Liwa Fatemiyoun told North Press a group of nine militants were captured by armed men raising ISIS banners while on a combing campaign in al-Masrab Desert in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

The source added connection with the group was lost minutes after the attack that targeted a military convoy of Liwa Fatemiyoun with machineguns.

The government forces and Iranian-backed militias deployed reinforcements across the desert in search of the missing militants but for no vain.

The source noted that individual weapons, RPGs and a four-wheel drive were in possession of the nine missing Afghan, Iraqi and Syrian militants.

Since 2017, the Syrian government forces have been combing the desert in response to ISIS increasing practices that have cause the forces massive human and material losses.

On Jan. 14, two soldiers of the government forces were killed after an IED exploded when a military vehicle carrying logistics for the Division 17 passed over it in al-Mayadin desert in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

These kind of attacks are usually carried out by ISIS sleeper cells, which continue to attack the government forces in the Syrian Badia by planting IEDs and setting ambushes.
