First Iraqi batch of 2023 leaves Syria’s Hawl Camp

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Nearly 600 Iraqis were repatriated on Saturday from the Hawl Camp, east of Hasakah, marking the first batch of families returned to Iraq this year.

An official source told North Press that the group was resettled in al-Jada camp in the Nineveh Governorate, northwest Iraq.

The batch included 146 families, or 584 individuals, the source added.

Last week, the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement spokesman, Ali Abbas Jahangir, declared to North Press that his ministry had completed all preparations in order to receive Iraqis in the near future.

In October 2022, the same ministry provided North Press with the total number of Iraqi families repatriated from Hawl: 948 families, in six batches.

Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is home to 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians, and 8.254 third-country nationals, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press.
