ISIS claims targeting tribal leader in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Islamic State (ISIS) claimed on Wednesday responsibility for targeting a tribal leader under the pretext of belonging to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a town north of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

The ISIS-run Amaq news agency said, in a statement, that the group’s militants targeted a vehicle of a tribal leader with close ties to the SDF near the town of al-Izba, in the northern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

The leader’s vehicle was damaged, according to the statement.

On Jan. 5, ISIS claimed responsibility for two operations against the SDF east of Deir ez-Zor, causing material damage.

Recently, ISIS sleeper cells have intensified their activities in Deir ez-Zor following the group’s announcement of its leader’s death.

In November 2022, ISIS announced that its overall leader Abu al-Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed and named Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi as the group’s new leader.
