Canada grants bail to Quebec returned from ISIS camp in NE Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, a Quebec court judge granted a woman, who was repatriated from a camp in northeast Syria and faces charges of terrorism-related offences, bail.
The 27-year-old Oumaima Chouay is charged with participating in the activity of Islamic State Organization (ISIS), providing property or services for terrorism purposes and conspiracy.
Chouay was granted bail, but the bail hearing or the reasons for her release are under a publication ban.
She was arrested at the Montreal-Trudeau airport in October 2022 on her arrival from Roj camp in northeast Syria.
Reuters said at the time, citing the police, that Chouay left Canada in 2014 and was suspected of working for the ISIS before Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested her in 2017.
On October 25 of 2022, Canada’s Ministry of Global Affairs repatriated four nationals, including two women and two children of the ISIS family members from camps in northeastern Syria.
This took place in a visit by an official Canadian delegation to northeast Syria that was received by officials of Foreign Affairs Department in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).
She was released on several conditions, including wearing a GPS tracking bracelet, ban on using social media, and never speaking to witnesses.
