Syria takes 3rd place in toll of ISIS operations in 2022

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Syria was ranked third in terms of the Islamic State Organization’s (ISIS) operations and attacks in 2022.

ISIS-run Amaq news agency published on Wednesday an infographic showing the operations carried out by ISIS during last year, with Nigeria taking the first place and Iraq coming second.

According to Amaq, ISIS carried out 297 attacks resulting in 887 causalities. North Press has documented 178 attacks in the areas of north and east Syria, without counting the operation that targeted the al-Sinaa Prison on January 21, 2022.

ISIS said it had carried out, during last year, 2.058 operations in which 6.881 persons were killed, 765 vehicles were destroyed and defected and 100 others were seized.

A year ago, ISIS operatives attacked the al-Sinaa Prison in Hasakah city in an attempt to free their fellow inmates. The operation sparked a 10-day battle between the extremist group’s militants and the Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) and resulted in nearly 500 deaths on both sides. The SDF won but a number of ISIS detainees managed to flee.

This attack on the al-Sina’a Prison is considered one of the most dangerous and notable events in 2022.

During December 2022, ISIS intensified its attacks against the SDF and increased its public appearances, as the group’s media outlets published six videos showing its militants swearing allegiance to their new leader.

In the same month, a cell of ISIS attacked a security center of the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) in Raqqa city, which led to six military personnel losing their lives.
