Government Soldier Killed in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, a Syrian government soldier was killed by unidentified attackers, targeting a government forces headquarters in a town east of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria.

A military source of the government forces in the town of al-Abbas, 90 kilometers east of Deir ez-Zor, told North Press that unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle targeted with machineguns a military post of the Division 18th on the outskirts of al-Abbas.

The 26-year-old Ali al-Ghnaim, who was guarding the headquarters and hails from the town of al-Boleel in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, was killed in the attack, the source added.

The attack is the second of its kind against this headquarters since the beginning of 2023, the source noted.

In December 2022, residents of al-Abbas found the bodies of a soldier of the Syrian government forces and his wife killed with a sharp tool inside their house.

The Iranian-backed militias and the Syrian government forces have been running vast swaths in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor since expelling ISIS in 2017.
