Italy donates €1 million for Syrian children with special disabilities
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, the United Nation International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said the government of Italy donated €1 million to ease sufferings of Syrian children with special disabilities.
“Italy is committed to support the rights of children with disabilities,” said Massimiliano D’Antuono, Chargé d’Affaires of the Italian Embassy in Damascus.
UNICEF praised the Italian cooperation in “respecting human rights, promoting activities aimed to combat cultural prejudices and stigma, and promoting social inclusion.”
“UNICEF’s integrated programme….strengthens their dignity and enhances their social inclusion”, said Alessandra Piermattei, AICS Director for Lebanon and Syria.
In Syria, according to the UNICEF statistics 14.6 million people, including more than 6.5 children, are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2022, with the children with special disabilities the hardest hit during the conflict.
In September, Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged the United Nations (UN) and governments to facilitate aid access and enhance protection for children with disabilities in Syria.
In the view of the ongoing Syrian conflict for over a decade and in light of the dire economic conditions and increasing prices, Syrians are left to face their fate alone with people, especially children, with special disability carrying double burdens when it comes to violence, threats to their health and safety, hunger, risk of abuse, and loss of education.
