SDC expresses solidarity with peaceful protests in Syria’s Suwayda

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the President of the Executive Committee of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Ilham Ahmad, expressed solidarity with protesters in the city of Suwayda, south Syria, and criticized the Syrian government for its policy against the citizens and their legitimate demands.

For the second day in a row, dozens of residents of Suwayda gathered in front of the governorate building, protesting the difficult living conditions and calling for improving services and living conditions in the city.

Clashes developed into confrontations between the protesters and the security forces of the government, which resulted in the death of two individuals and the injury of at least five.

Ahmad criticized in a tweet the policy of the security authorities in meeting the protesters’ demands, saying, “The Syrian regime is still killing Syrians.”

“We support the Druze brothers with their demands for a better life,” Ahmad said expressing solidarity with the protesters.

The Syrian politician highlighted the reality of living and governing in the areas under the control of the Syrian government, noting that Suwayda is a living model of Syria.

Ahmad called on the Syrian government to stop using violence against protesters and the peaceful protests.

The city of Suwayda undergoes a state of tension as military reinforcements are being deployed in the city center, following Sunday’s protests.

In response, Syria’s Ministry of Interior said in a statement that a “group of outlaws,” some of them carried individual arms, blocked a road with burning tires next to al-Mashnaqa roundabout in Suwayda Governorate, said the state-run SANA News Agency.

The Ministry vowed it would “pursue the outlaws and take legal measures against anyone who tries to tamper with the security and stability” of Suwayda and the safety of its citizens.
