One killed, five injured in protests in Syria’s Suwayda

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – A young man was killed and five others were injured on Sunday in clashes between protesters and security forces in the vicinity of the Suwayda Governorate Building, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press, “The security forces [of the Syrian government] in the police headquarters opened fire directly at protesters, which led to casualties.”

He added that the shooting killed Murad al-Matni, a resident of Suwayda, and wounded at least five others, one of whom was known as Kinan Khaseir. All were taken to the National Hospital of the city.

After storming the governorate building, the protesters set fire to several rooms.

Earlier today, dozens of Suwayda residents staged a protest in front of the governorate building, expressing their discontent over the deteriorating living conditions.

The situation quickly developed into confrontations between the protesters and the police forces, after the demonstrators tore down pictures of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at the entrance of the building, prompting security forces to open fire on them.

Suwayda Governorate is witnessing a cautious calm with empty streets after the protest.
