Russia should stop Turkish attacks on Syria – Abdi
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander in Chief, Mazloum Abdi, said Russia, as a guarantor of ceasefire agreement in northeastern Syria signed with Turkey in 2019, should assume responsibility of stopping Turkish escalation against the region.
Since Nov. 20, Turkey has continued targeting the areas in northeast Syria, leaving losses in civilian and military life in addition to hitting infrastructures in the region.
Abdi, in an exclusive interview in Washington Online program which North Press broadcasts in Arabic from Washington, DC, held Russia responsible for stopping the attacks and taking firmer stance under Sochi agreement of 2019 that contributed to deploying Syrian government forces and Russian troops in the region.
The SDF Commander noted that Russia should prevent any Turkish military operation against the region.
He went further saying that it is of no doubt that Russian-Ukrainian war has affected Russian position, “Russia tries to cope with Turkey to gain supportive stances for its war in Ukraine.”
But this is not reasonable for Russia “to ignore the Turkish attacks on Syria and allow it to violate the agreement between Putin and Erdogan in 2019,” Abdi said.
He added, “We know Russia rejects the Turkish attacks, in this way it discloses its position and that discussions over these attacks between the two countries are underway.”
The SDF Commander in Chief noted, “We call for Russia to show firmer positions and demand Turkey lives up to the previous concluded agreement and solve disputes through dialogue rather than war.”
