22.000 students deprived of education due to Turkish shelling – AANES

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Education Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) released Tuesday a statement to the public opinion in which it assessed the impact of the recent Turkish shelling against the education sector, saying that it deprived about 22.000 students of schooling.

The AANES’ Education Board condemned the Turkish bombardment of schools and said that it spread fear and horror among students and their families after it completely destroyed a school in the village of Koran, east of Kobani city, and partially damaged three others.

On Wednesday, the villages in the eastern countryside of Kobani were subjected to heavy artillery shelling, which completely destroyed the Koran’s school, in addition to damaging homes.

The shelling deprived 21.843 students of education, distributed in the regions of Afrin, Kobani, al-Jazira and Manbij. It also caused 243 schools to close their doors, according to the statement.

Since November 20, the AANES-held areas in northern Syria have repeatedly been subjected to Turkish ground and air bombardment.

The statement called on international organizations concerned with education and children’s rights to condemn the Turkish attacks which killed civilians and damaged infrastructure.
