Iraq’s Foreign Ministry Denounces Iranian Attacks on KRI
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced on Monday the Iranian attacks across the border on Kurdish Iranian opposition headquarters in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).
The ministry stressed on taking high-level diplomatic measures against Iran.
On November 14, Iran launched on Monday missile and drone attacks targeting a headquarter of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in the vicinity of the town of Koya in Erbil Governorate.
On late September, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Group Corps (IRGC) launched a fierce attack against military posts in several areas in the KRI – especially in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk – with more than 73 ballistic missiles and drones, killing 13 people and injuring about 50 others, including women and children.
This came in tandem with another attack against a base of a major opposition group, Komala, the Iranian Kurdish Communist Party, near Sulaymaniyah, killing one and wounding eight, according to the Ministry of Health of KRI.
The ministry “condemns, in strong and repeated terms, the artillery and drone attacks carried out by Iran this morning against a number of areas of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” the ministry said in a statement.
The attacks resulted in casualties among the civilians, the statement added.
The ministry noted that such “blatant transgressions” would not resolve issues but “increase tension in the region.”
Hours after the attack, UN in Iraq condemned the Iranian attacks, saying that they violate Iraqi sovereignty.
“Iraq should not be used as an arena to settle scores and its territorial integrity must be respected,” the UN tweeted
“Dialogue between Iraq and Iran over mutual security concerns is the only way forward,” the UN added.
In late September, many areas in KRI witnessed similar shelling operations claiming the lives of 13 person and wounding more than 50 others.
