UN warns of global warming in Climate Change Conference Cop27

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Secretary-General of the UN,Antonio Guterres, said on Monday at the opening of Climate Change Conference (Cop27) in Egypt, “We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.”

Last Sunday, the Cop27 was launched in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh, in Egypt, as representatives of about 200 countries, including about 120 at presidential level, will meet to discuss the implications of climate change in the world.

Minister of Foreign of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, took over the presidency of the 27th session of the Climate Change Conference from the president of COP26, Secretary of State for Business in Britain, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma.

Guterres warned that the world is on the verge of “mass suicide” in light of the escalating global warming crisis.

Figures indicated that global warming is expected to reach 2.8 degrees Celsius, which is catastrophic, according to the UN.

In turn, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he wanted to “put pressure” on “rich non-European countries”, especially the US and China, to pay their “share” in helping poor countries to cope with climate change.

The 13-day conference is dominated by tension over losses, damages and promising compensation funds for developing countries.
